What a weekend at River Valley Ranch! Every year our goal as the FCA MD Boys Lacrosse Club is to provide our players with a fun experience away from the lacrosse field that challenges them to grow as followers of Christ and as teammates. As a result, the RVR Club Retreat creates new memories, a ton of fellowship, and little to no sleep. This year in particular was one to remember. In just two 24 hour sessions we had 180 players from our all of our youth teams. Almost 100% participation by our players! As always, our players came energized and excited and left exhausted after a full day of fun away from lacrosse and school. Some of the favorite activities that took place this year were the 1500-foot Zip-line, dodgeball tournament, archery tag, paint ball, and the Ninja Warrior barn. All of which is fun on its own and then you add 5 inches of snow on top of it RVR changes into a winter wonderland and the excitement of the first snow fall adds to the challenges and fun.
When our Club players were not bouncing off of the walls or competing against each other we were together in the Old Time Meeting house to hear from our Speaker Jon Smith (Shook). Jon is graduate of UMBC and a four-year starter for the men’s lacrosse team under Don Zimmerman. As well as, the Founder and President of ONEU Network, Executive Director of ONEU and pastor at Redeemer Arlington Church. Not only that but Jon was also involved with FCA Lacrosse when he was in college. All that to say, we were blessed to have a faith driven man who knows the lacrosse world speak to our club players.
Our Fall theme has been “SOLID,” from Matthew 7:24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.” Jon had the opportunity to speak twice to both sessions and then our Huddle Leaders, made up of our FCA MD Captains and current college lacrosse players, lead them in a team huddle following the talks. The first of which was from Luke 7 when Jesus raises a widow’s son and the second wrapping up our theme Solid discussing Matthew 7:24 from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. As a Club we are thankful for the opportunity for Jon to present the Gospel and discuss even further what has taken place in our huddles this Fall. What we have discovered from the scripture, there are really only two options for a foundation in our lives; live on the sand of this world or on the solid rock of Jesus Christ. Now is our job to learn and develop what our foundation is!
We are excited to keep learning what this means as we go into our new theme for the Spring and Summer. The 2018 FCA theme is STRONG from 2 Timothy 4:7 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Cannot wait to dive into what that will mean for our Club and us as individuals this upcoming year. All in all, a very memorable and successful Club Retreat! Thank you to parents for getting your kids out to RVR despite the weather, thank you to RVR for hosting us, and thank you all for being a part of our FCA MD Club!
Merry Christmas and God bless!
